Stories That Must Be Told - Why Your Nomination Matters More Than You Think

Across the Armed Forces community, there are people who quietly change lives.

They run breakfast clubs for military children. They mentor service leavers through the uncertainty of transition. They organise community events that reconnect veterans with friendship, purpose, and belonging. They advocate, fundraise, support families, and build bridges between civilian society and the military world. Almost without exception, they do it without seeking recognition.

At the Armed Forces Community Awards at Soldiering On, we see this every year. The most extraordinary individuals, teams, and organisations are often the least likely to nominate themselves. They’re too busy getting on with the job. Too modest to step forward. Too focused on others to put their own work in the spotlight.

That’s why nominations matter so much.

Recognition doesn’t just celebrate achievement. It validates enormous effort. It tells people that their work is valued and appreciated. It gives them a moment to pause, breathe, and realise that what they do truly makes a difference. But more than that, nominations tell stories that inspire others.

When we share these stories, we show what service looks like beyond uniform. We show how military values live on in businesses, charities, community groups, schools, families, and workplaces across the UK. We show that the Armed Forces community is not separate from society, it is woven through it, and this year, that connection takes centre stage.

New for 2026: The Connecting Society Award

We are proud to introduce the brand-new Connecting Society Award. This category recognises something we see everywhere but rarely celebrate explicitly: the power of connection.

This award honours a team, organisation, or community group that demonstrates exceptional commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community through a true whole-society approach. Rooted in the values and standards of the Armed Forces, nominations should show practical, sustained action that brings together organisations, communities, and families from across society.

It’s about those who break down barriers, those who create opportunities, and those who strengthen resilience, not just within the Armed Forces community, but across the nation. When society connects with its Armed Forces community, everyone benefits.

If You Know Someone, This Is Your Moment

Many of the people who deserve recognition never put themselves forward. They may not think what they do is special or realise the impact they have. This is where you come in.  If someone has helped your organisation grow, supported your family, inspired your team, or strengthened your community, then their story deserves to be heard. Your nomination might be the moment that reminds them their work matters.

Not Sure How to Nominate? Join Our Workshop

If you’re unsure where to start or want guidance on how to put forward a strong nomination, we’re here to help. On 4 March, we’re hosting an online Nominations Workshop designed to guide you through the process, explain what judges look for, and help you tell a compelling story. Whether you’ve nominated before or this is your first time, this session will give your nominee the very best possible chance of success.  You can register here.

Recognition matters. Stories matter. The Armed Forces community matters.
