Connections Made, Stories Shared: Finalists Gather at the House of Lords

What a night.

On Wednesday 15 July, finalists, partners, judges and supporters of the Armed Forces Community Awards at Soldiering On came together at the House of Lords for the 2026 Finalists' Reception, an evening dedicated to recognising the people and organisations whose impact continues to strengthen the Armed Forces community.

Held in the stunning surroundings of the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace overlooking the Thames, the reception provided an opportunity for finalists from across this year's categories to meet, share experiences and celebrate the journeys that brought them to this stage. More than that, it brought to life one of the key themes running through this year's Awards: Connecting Society.

Throughout the evening, conversations flowed between veterans, military families, charities, businesses, supporters and partners. New connections were made, old friendships renewed and countless stories shared. It was a powerful reminder that the Armed Forces community does not exist in isolation; it thrives through the relationships, partnerships and networks that bring people together and create lasting impact.

Hosted with warmth, humour and genuine admiration by Jeremy Vine, the evening celebrated far more than award nominations. Behind every finalist is a story of service, resilience, determination and commitment to others. These stories are the heart of the Armed Forces Community Awards at Soldiering On and demonstrate the extraordinary contribution the military community continues to make across British society.

Of course, no reception would be complete without a few memorable moments.

A particular highlight came courtesy of one of this year's Animal Partnership Award finalists, whose four-legged representative from Hounds for Heroes displayed impeccable comedic timing by making their presence known during speeches from both Jeremy Vine and Major General The Rt Hon the Lord Lancaster of Kimbolton PC, drawing smiles and laughter from around the room.

Former England captain Terry Butcher also proved a huge hit with guests, captivating the audience with his trademark charisma, stories and reflections throughout the evening.

And while England may have fallen just short on the football pitch that night, there was certainly no shortage of winning performances inside the House of Lords, where the spirit, achievements and camaraderie of our finalists ensured the evening was an overwhelming success.

Guests also heard from Calvin Bailey, whose thoughtful and inspiring closing remarks provided a fitting conclusion to an evening built on celebration, recognition and connection.

The reception would not have been possible without the support of Centrica, whose continued commitment to the Armed Forces Community Awards at Soldiering On helped bring together such an exceptional group of people and organisations.

As Awards Night moves ever closer, the reception served as an important reminder of what these Awards are really about. Not trophies. Not titles. People.

People who continue to serve their communities. People who overcome adversity. People who create opportunities for others. People whose actions strengthen the bonds between the Armed Forces community and wider society.

The finalists represent the very best of that spirit.
